Why Do DIY Epoxy Kits Fail?

The Difference Professional Prep Makes

Many of the floors we're called to fix are failed DIY epoxy kits. The most common reasons they peel, flake, or lift include:
  • Poor surface preparation: acid etching or simply cleaning the floor doesn't open up the concrete enough for a strong bond. We mechanically prepare the concrete so the coating can grip it.
  • Thin, water-based materials: many kits are closer to paint than to professional epoxy and leave a very thin coat.
  • Moisture: moisture coming up through the slab can push coatings off the floor. We assess moisture and use a moisture vapor barrier primer when needed.
  • Hot tires: thin coatings can lift when hot tires sit on them, a problem often called "hot tire pickup".
If you have an old DIY coating, it will need to be removed before your new floor goes down. We'll look at it during your free onsite consultation.
