Square footage is the area of your floor: length times width. Here's how to measure it:
  • Rectangular or square spaces: measure the length and the width of the floor in feet, then multiply them. Example: a garage that is 20 ft by 22 ft is 20 x 22 = 440 sq ft.
  • L-shaped or irregular spaces: split the floor into rectangles, calculate each one, then add them together. Example: a 20 x 20 ft area plus a 10 x 8 ft nook = 400 + 80 = 480 sq ft.
  • Inches: if your measurements include inches, divide the inches by 12 to convert them to feet (6 inches = 0.5 ft).
  • Measure wall to wall at floor level, and include areas under shelves or cabinets only if those areas will be coated.
Common garage sizes for reference (sizes vary, so measuring is always best):
  • 1-car garage: often around 250 to 300 sq ft
  • 2-car garage: often around 400 to 600 sq ft
  • 3-car garage: often around 600 to 900 sq ft
